After the uwanuri (finish coatings) are applied, the process of roiro begins in order to polish the lacquered surface. The bowl is polished with Suruga charcoal or roiro charcoal to make it flat and smooth. Then it is soaked in lacquer and polished with a fine abradant to make it as shiny as a mirror. This is done very carefully by hand (i.e., without any cloth, paper, etc.) so that no scratches will be made during this process.
