Once in a valley in Kawachi, a white light started to appear every night. Villagers went to the valley to search the cause and found a white old monkey dead there. This monkey was carrying a scroll around the chest. Villagers found six Chinese characters written on the scroll, representing "I sincerely believe in merciful Buddha". This scroll was once a treasure of a certain temple but believed that it was lost by fire. It seemed that this white monkey had taken it out before the temple was burnt down. Later, Saint Rennyo found that this scroll was in Saint Shinran's own handwriting and returned it to the resident priest of the temple. The priest later moved to Isurugi and established Dorinji Temple to keep the scroll as a treasure of monkey Buddha.
