One silkworm usually produces one cocoon, but sometimes two silkworms produce one cocoon together. This is called a dupion cocoon. This kind of cocoons is difficult to spin yard from them and is only handled as waste cocoons. Ushikubi-tsumugi uses these dupion cocoons by raveling them patiently and weaving up by special technique. It characterizes in sheen of silk, gentle touch and excellent durability. It does not tear on a nail but is durable enough to pull out the tail, thus referred to "nail claw pongee".
