Kenrokuen through the ages
Kenrokuen was not created all at once in one period of time; it has undergone several major changes since the first lord of the Kaga clan, Maeda Toshiie, made his triumphant entry into Kanazawa Castle 420 years ago.
The fifth Lord Maeda Tsunanori built Renchi-tei Garden on the slope across from Kanazawa Castle, and 180 years later, the 13th lord Maeda Nariyasu joined Renchi-tei Garden and the plateau above it, creating the original of Kenrokuen as we know it today. Afterwards, various twists and turns came to pass before the garden took its present form.
