The Four Teahouses

Yugao-tei Teahouse

Yugao-tei Teahouse was built by Maeda Harunaga, the 11th Maeda lord, at the time of the reconstruction of Renchi-tei Garden. It was completed in 1774, one month after Midori-taki Waterfall was built, and there are records of celebratory tea ceremonies having been held there.

The name "Yugao-tei" comes from the moonflower design on the wall.

The design of the building is said to be of a style favored by Oribe Furuta, a follower of the famous tea master Sen-no-rikyu, and it resembles "En-nan", the tea-room of the Yabu-uchi family of Kyoto. (Building closed to the public)

The absence of a low entranceway, and entrance with two sliding doors distinguish this teahouse from "En-nan".
