Kitamae ships, which
achieved the height of prosperity, began to decline in the middle
of the Meiji Era.
Due to the advent of the steamship and the
progress of communication technology, cargo and information
were transferred throughout the country more rapidly and on
a larger scale, eventually replacing the ships in the leading
role of distribution.
However, it was certainly Kitamae ship owners who dominated
their era, supported the Japanese economy and became the driving
force of the Japanese shipping industry in the 19th century.
