HISTORY Locals competed one another for techniques Originally, gunpowder was used as weapon. The beginning of using gunpowder for entertainment, for example in fireworks, started around the middle term of the Edo period. Until the beginning of the Showa period, local youth groups manufactured the fireworks of their own for festivals and religious occasions. Their recipes of mixing gunpowder were kept confidential. In 1933 fireworks manufacturing became a business and opened factory in Oshimizu town in Noto region. CHARACTERISTICS Won 3 grand prizes at national contests The fireworks manufactured in Ishikawa Prefecture are shooting-up fireworks, staged fireworks, creative fireworks, and toy fireworks. In recent years, fireworks are used for various outdoor events and theatricals. Winter is the manufacturing season, and workers are kept busy to meet the orders. The traditional craftsmanship is highly praised. They have won 3 grand prizes at the national fireworks contests which are held annually on the banks of Nagara river, Gifu Prefecture. |
