HISTORY
Paper lanterns were widely used during the first term of the Edo period
Paper lanterns were first made in the 16th century, replacing torches that were used as
portable light source. It was during the first term of the Edo period when paper lanterns
took today's form. When candles became handy to acquire, the use of paper lanterns
spread rapidly throughout the nation.
In Iswhikawa Prefecture alone, there were more than 60 paper lantern manufacturers
at its peak. Most of them manufactured not only paper lanterns but also paper
umbrellas. The number of manufacturers decreased as flash lights and street lights
became common. At present paper lanterns are made mainly for festivals and as
ornaments.

For festivals, quality paper lanterns.
Kaga paper lanterns are made in a traditional method that paper is placed on the
bamboo ribs. Unlike paper lanterns made in Gifu Prefecture, where a long, single spiral
bamboo rib is used, in Kaga separate bamboo strips are made into loops and then tied
with cotton threads. It takes extra processing, but the finished lanterns are more
durable and contour of the lantern curves beautifully. As quality lanterns, demands are
high for festival uses, particularly in the spring and in the fall.
