HISTORY
Kaga clan hired famed craftsmen with high wages
Because of its light weight and resiliency, bamboo was used widely as material for
armors, musical instruments, furnishings as well as in industrial and daily wares. Kaga
clan hired a number of famed craftsmen with high wages and had them manufacture
ladles and flower vases for tea ceremonies and flower arrangements. There were always
a number of patronized bamboo craftsmen in the clan's Craftsman's House.
CHARACTERISTICS
Gaining renewed popularity as quality speaks by itself
After the war, woven bamboo wares were temporarily replaced by cheap plastic wares.
However, as natural and quality products regained favor of the public, the woven
bamboo wares are attracting renewed popularity. Ishikawa's woven bamboo wares are
appreciated as handicrafts and used in tea ceremonies and flower arrangements rather
than simple folk gift items.
Varieties of weaving techniques have been developed by the craftsmen of old and new in
the pursuit of elaborate techniques and beautiful finishes.
