HISTORY

Blacksmith appointed by Kaga clan

The town of Tsurugi in the foot hill of holy mountain Hakusan flourished around Ichinomiya, a sub shrine of Hakusan Hime Jinja Grand Shrine. As name Tsurugi indicates, it was a cutlery-producing town. The town is the home of Ittetsu, Kaga clan's appointed sward manufacturer. The town was producing a wide variety of cutlery for lumber jacks, farmers as well as household users.

Even today, cutlery of daily uses such as hatchets, hoes and skinning knives are being manufactured.

CHARCTERISTICS

Old techniques are still maintained

The manufacturing techniques have not changed. In the last several hundred years, the only things changed are pine tree charcoals which are replaced by coals and bellows which, in turn, are replaced by ventilator. The craftsmen tell the temperature by watching the color of fire, the timing for iron and steel to fuse and bring sharpest results. The technique requires years of practice and a moment of judgment.
