PRESENT CONDITION


One Seventh of Workforce Engaged in Production

With about 700 workshops and 2,200 people involved, the Wajima lacquerware is a key industry of Wajima. One seventh of the city's workforce is engaged in its production.

Due to the economic recession, the production is now about 9 billion yen, much less than it was at its peak. However, among the 20 or so wooden lacquerware production areas, it still ranks number one.

Developing new products for
modern day living

輪島塗画像 In order to overcome declining production, the industry is tackling to develop new products to match modern day life style. One of such attempts is manufacturing large size wall panels for interior decorations, with extensive application of traditional techniques. They are also manufacturing loop ties and necklaces. Much effort is spent on developing new demands for new products and public relations.

Raising successor is another aspect of the industry. The industry is seriously concerned about younger generation who are less interested in Wajima Lacquer Ware. Institutions such as Wajima Commercial High School, Wajima Lacquer Ware High Technical Vocational School, and Wajima Lacquer Ware Technical Training Center are providing classes to raise successors. In addition, to help raise awareness of Wajima Lacquer Ware, lunches are served in Wajima Lacquer Ware at elementary schools and junior high schools in Wajima City.
