It was founded in 1967 as a training and researching center in order to teach the techniques holders of important intangible cultural property (human national treasures) have, and to have them develop, as well as to maintain the techniques of lacquer ware, to research and study them and to collect materials.
It has Mr. Oba Shogyo of maki-e as its director, and Mr. Shioda Keishiro of kyushitsu and Mr. Kawagita Ryozo of woodwork (both holders of important intangible cultural property living in Ishikawa) as main instructors. It has been teaching every technique of lacquer ware in the four courses (soji, kyushitsu, maki-e, and chinkin). Each course is limited to five students, and lasts for three years.
In addition, it has a "special training course" (limited to 10 students, lasting for two years), for those who do not have any basic techniques of lacquer ware. This course accepts students from abroad. it actually maintains the techniques of lacquer ware and transmits the information.
