It was founded in 1946 when the post-war confusion barely faded away. Now it sends forth a lot of artists as a college with the departments of fine arts (four courses), of design (three courses) and of crafts. It also promotes traditional crafts, and its Research Institute of Arts and Crafts concentrates on researches and studies, such as "Study on Kaga Clan O-saiku-sho," "Study on Techniques, Producing Procedure of Traditional Crafts," and "Research and Study on Gold Leaf in the World." It focuses on the techniques of traditional arts and crafts in Ishikawa (including Kanazawa), the application of raw materials, and the quest for possibilities. It gets engaged in extramural activities, like "The Four Art University Festival" with Tokyo National University of Fine Arts, Kyoto Art University, Aichi Art University, and exchanges its students and teachers with other schools in more than 20 countries.
