A new world of Kutani pottery from the "Saiyu" technique.
Tokuda Yasokichi III has made great efforts to develop his
"Saiyu" technique based on the Old Kutani color glaze enamels handed
down from Yasokichi I. "Saiyu" is characterized by delicate shading
and beautiful contrast of the colors of the enamel glaze. Using this
original technique, Yasokichi III has created his own world.
Yasokichi III fires his Uwa-e overglaze works at a temperature
higher than that of conventional Kutani porcelain. He pictures the
color combination he wants in the completed work and mixes glaze
enamels to suit. The glaze enamels change into beautiful colors by
repeated firing and by adjustment of the firing time. In this way
refined and delicate works are completed.
What has distinguished Yasokichi is his bringing to life the
beauty of Aote Ko-Kutani (Green Old Kutani) in a contemporary setting,
and the way he thus explores new possibilities for Kutani glaze enamels.
