Biography
Born on January 14, 1911.
Born in Kanazawa City. He became apprenticed to Minamino Kogetsu, a Yuzen craftsman of Kanazawa,
in 1925 and to Kyokushi Koho of Kyoto in 1931, and went independent in Kyoto in 1937. Active mainly
at the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition. Tokyo Educational Council Award at the 23rd Japan
Traditional Crafts Exhibition in 1976. Purple Medal, 1976. Kyoto Arts and Crafts Person of Merits,
1978. Class Four Zuiho Medal, 1982. Lives in Kyoto.
Distinctive world in hand-made Yuzen.
Hata Tokio learned Kyo Yuzen Silk after learning Kaga Yuzen Silk. Then, he went independent, and
has been making studying Yuzen dyeing as a Yuzen craftsman. He is working on do-kake which
has been used at Gion Festival in order to hand down modern Yuzen to future generations.
His Yuzen dyeing is the one which combines Kaga Yuzen Silk and Kyo Yuzen Silk. Kaga Yuzen Silk
has realistic and picturesque designs with distincetive color arrangement and gradation dyeing,
while Kaga Yuzen Silk has magnificent coloring and elegant designs. The subjects are mainly flowers,
birds and natural landscapes. He is known for his elaborate style using the traditional techniques
such as itome-nori and sekidashi-nori. Clear creative concepts and simple and fresh
designes and coloring are his characteristics, and he is highly praised for pioneering the
distinctive world in hand-painting Yuzen Silk.
