Biography
Born on April 20, 1896; died on June 15, 1986.
Born in Kanazawa City. Was admitted to Ishikawa
Prefectural Industrial School (lacquerware department), 1910; to Tokyo School of Art (lacquerware
department), 1914. Professor at Tokyo School of Art, 1943. Member of the Japan Art Academy, 1947.
Specialty member of the Cultural Property Preservation Council, 1950. Board chairman of the Japan
Crafts Society, 1962. Honorary professor at Tokyo National Universtity of Fine Arts, 1963.
Person of Cultural Merits, 1963.
He made efforts for the revival of traditional crafts after World War Two.
Matsuda Gonroku, after graduating from Tokyo School of Art, distinguished himself in the arts
and crafts field and also worked on the interior designing of a passenger boat and on the lacquer
decoration of the honored visitors' house of the Diet Building. He made efforts for the revival
of traditional crafts, for the supervision of cultural property preservation project (such as
the restroation of Chusonji Konjiki-do, and the research on Shosoin treasures), and for the
international cultural exchange.
He found the Japan Crafts Society in 1955, and started the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition.
He contributed to the restoration of fine arts culture and educated many successors after World
War Two. He modernized the classic techniques of mother-of-pearl inlay and hyomon. The
gentleness with a feel of arrival of peace and the carefree elegance can be seen in his woks.
