| The Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa is active in the wrld
Cultural of Ishikawa is not all traditional. The Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa is a renowned
professional chamber music orchestra and is the first of such orchestras in the nation. The
orchestra was formed in 1988 by Ishikawa Prefecture and Kanazawa City. As music director, Hiroyuki
Iwaki, the permanent conductor of NHK Orchestra was invited. The orchestra is designed to be small
so that it maintains the size to the ones when Mozart and Beethoven used to conduct. In a small
orchestra, each player is required of high standard of musical techniques.
The members are screened from publicly recruited musicians from all over the world. The orchestra
performs not only in Ishikawa but also in such cities like Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and in overseas.
It also performs premieres of contracted composers' original modern music pieces. In 1995 one
of such originals won the Idemitsu Grand Prize.
The repertoires include all of Beethoven's symphonies and since 1995 all of Mozart's symphonies.
Today, the Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa is one of the most watched-upon orchestras in the nation.
