Omicho Market has a long history of 280 years, and is
indispensable to the people of Kanazawa City. It is said
that the Market originated as a morning market in 1580.
In 1721, such morning markets gathered in Omicho, and
became the model for the current Omicho Market. The number
of shops is currently about 180 including fish shops,
vegetable shops, meat shops and so on. When you walk through
the streets filled with plenty of foods, you will notice
that there is a lot of cheer and roudy vendors. They would
teach you how to cook and prepare the food. It still has
an unaffected atmosphere. This Market attracts sightseers
from outside Ishikawa also, because of its great variety,
freshness and reasonable prices. |

| A combination
of fisheries in Ishikawa opened Kanazawa Port Fish Market
in March 1999, which is subsidized by the national government
and local government. The most attractive points of this
Fish Market are its freshness and value for money. You
can get freshly caught fish, because the market is right
next to the Kanazawa Port. Additionally, fishermen and
brokers open shops and sell fish directly to the customer,
so that you can get fish at good prices. They kindly teach
you how to cook seasonal fish and how to shell the fish.

| Many street
stalls are open from 7:00 to 11:00 in the morning along
Honcho Street in the Kawai district in Wajima City. Fresh
fish, seaweed, vegetables and edible wild plants are sold
on mats, in tents or in stalls. The number of shops is
usually 200. It sometimes grows to 350, and the street
is filled with the cheerful voice of sellers. Foods are
sold directly by producers, so that the prices are relatively
low. The prices get lower depending on your negotiating
skills. You can ask them to fillet a fish there. In the
precincts of Sumiyoshi Shrine near the Wajima Port, an
evening market is open from 16:00 to 18:00. The origin
of the morning market is not known for certain, but it
is estimated that it began sometime during the Nara era. |
