1550 Toshiie's father Toshiharu becomes Matsu's guardian.
1551 January: Toshiie goes to serve Nobunaga. His income is 50 kan.
August: he took the samurai's topknot hairstyle, and was named Magoshiro Toshiie.
1556 Goes against Nobunaga and fights Nobuyuki's soldiers, earning success. His income is increased from 100 kan to 150 kan.
1558 Toshiie (22) and Matsu (12) marry. Toshiie is now called Matazaemon.
1559 Slays another of Nobunaga's retainers, Juami, and is thus dismissed from Nobunaga's service. He lives with the priestly family of Matsuoka, and the Hayashis of Mikawa-Goyu.
1560 Nobunaga vanquishes Imagawa Yoshimoto at the Battle of Okehazama. Toshiie quietly joins Nobunaga's side and fights well, but is not readmitted into Nobunaga's service.
His father Toshiharu dies.
1561 May: Nobunaga fights Saito Tatsuoki at Mino-Moribe. Toshiie's success here allows him back into Nobunaga's service with an increase of 300 kan, making his total income 450 kan.
September: the Battle of Kawanaka Island.
1562 May: Nobunaga fights Saito Tatsuoki's soldiers at Mino Karumi. Toshiie takes part
1567 August: Nobunaga expels Saito Tatsuoki from Mino-Inabayama, which he renames Gifu. Toshiie takes part.
1568 September: Nobunaga supports Ashikaga Yoshiaki and sets him up in Kyoto as the last Ashikaga Shogun. He then goes after Rokkaku Syotei of Omi. Toshiie fights in this battle and is made a member of the Red Shields.
1569 August: Nobunaga surrounds Kitabatake Tomonori at Ise-Okouchi. Toshiie takes part.
October: Toshiie is directed by Nobunaga to become head of the Maeda family. His income is now 2450 kan.
1570 April: Nobunaga attacks Asakura Yoshikage at Echizen-Tetsuzuyama. Toshiie takes part.
June: Nobunaga attacks Asai Nagamasa at Odani Castle. Toshiie takes part.
September: Toshiie fights with Nobunaga in Settsu against the military priests of the Honganji. (Where he uses his long spear on the dyke)
Nobunaga surrounds Asai and Asakura's forces on Mt Hiei. Toshiie takes part.
Toshiie receives 10,000 koku at Omi-Nagahama (may be apocryphal).
1572 July: Nobunaga attacks Asai Nagamasa at Odani Castle. Toshiie takes part.
1573 August: Nobunaga defeats Asakura Yoshikage at Echizen-Toneyama and destroys the Asakuras' stronghold at Ichijodani and the Asai's stronghold at Omi-Kotani. Toshiie takes part.
Nobunaga drives Ashikaga Yoshiaki out of Kyoto. The Muromachi Shogunate falls.
1574 Nobunaga fights the Jodo-Shinshu sect of military priests of Ise-Nagashima. Toshiie takes part.
Uesugi Kenshin marches on Etchu and Kaga from his base in Echigo.
1575 May: at the Battle of Nagashino the Nobunaga-Ieyasu alliance defeats Takeda Katsuyori. Toshiie takes part as the General of the Gunnery Infantry.
August: Nobunaga destroys the Jodo-Shinshu priest-soldiers of Echizen. Toshiie takes part.
September: Nobunaga divides up Echizen. Toshiie, Sassa Narimasa, and Fuwa Mitsuharu (the Echizen Triumvirate) receive 100,000 koku (actually closer to 33,000 koku).
1576 Nobunaga's base, Azuchi castle, is built near Lake Biwa.
1577 August: Toshiie departs for Kaga with Shibata Katsuie and holds back Uesugi Kenshin. The next month they draw back, and take on Kenshin's attack.
1578 Uesugi Kenshin vanquished.
1580 Shibata Katsuie pacifies the "Peasant's Kingdom" in Kaga.
1581 March: Uesugi Kagekatsu's incursion is prevented, and Toshiie moves into Etchu.
Toshiie is granted the domain of Noto, with an estimated income of over 200,000 koku. He moves into Nanao Castle.
Toshinaga marries Nobunaga's daughter, and is given Echizen-Fuchu.
1582 January: Toshiie builds Komaruyama Castle at Nanao.
Nobunaga and Ieyasu defeat Takeda Katsuyori at the Battle of Tenmokuzan.
Toshiie attacks Etchu-Toyama Castle and Uozu Castle with Shibata Katsuie. The Honnoji Incident in June (when Nobunaga was betrayed and murdered) makes them withdraw quickly.
Hideyoshi makes a forced march from the Chugoku region and annihilates Akechi Mistuhide, Nobunaga's betrayer.
July: Toshiie burns down the Tempeiji temple at Noto-Sekidozan and defeats Nukui Kagataka, Miyake Munetaka, and the priest-soldiers.
1583 Toshiie and Toshinaga both participate in Shibata Katsuie's attack on Omi. At the Battle of Shizugatake Katsuie flees in defeat. Toshiie flees back to Echizen-Fuchu and surrenders to Hideyoshi. Katsuie commits suicide at his castle in Kita-no-Sho.
Toshiie mops up Kaga. In addition to Noto he is given Kahoku and Ishikawa counties in Kaga and moves to Kanazawa Castle.
Toshinaga moves from Etchizen-Fuchu to Matto, and his income increases to 40,000 koku.
1584 Sassa Narimasa is driven back at the Battle of Suemori Castle.
Gold is found under Mt Hodatsu in Noto.
1585 Hideyoshi comes to Kanazawa for the advance into Etchu. Toshiie participates and expels Sassa Narimasa from Toyama Castle.
Toshinaga is given the three counties of Imizu, Tonami, and Nei in Etchu and bases himself in Moriyama.
November: Maeda Hidetsugu (Toshiie's youngest brother) and his wife are crushed to death when an earthquake destroys Kibune Castle.
1586 March: Toshiie goes to Kyoto and is made Imperial Guard Vice-Minister of the Left of the Lower Fourth Rank, and created Lord Chikuzen.
April: Hideyoshi begins work on the Jurakudai Palace in Kyoto (finished in September the next year).
Toshiie also builds a mansion in Kyoto.
1587 February: Toshinaga joins Hideyoshi's march on Kyushu with 3,000 men. Toshiie remains in Kyoto to keep an eye on things.
July: They return in triumph to Osaka.
September: Jurakudai is completed, and Ma'a goes to live there.
October: Toshiie attends the Great Kitano Tea Ceremony.
1588 Toshiie and Toshinaga send 10,000 men to help in the building of the Buddha Hall.
Toshimasa is given the domain of Noto.
The Sword Hunt (Hideyoshi ordered that all commoners should give up their weapons.) is conducted in Toshiie's domain.
1589 April: Sen-no-Rikyu, the famous Tea Master, invites Toshiie and Asano Nobumasa to a tea ceremony.
Toshiie is appointed Special General of the Imperial Guard.
1590 January: Toshiie is promoted to Full Fourth Rank and joins the Imperial Parliament.
Toshiie and others set out for the Kanto to conquer Hojos. They surrender in July, and Ieyasu is given the eight provinces of the Kanto.
1591 Toshiie and Toshinaga become Hideyoshi's Otogishu, skilled storytellers.
October: Toshiie resigns from the Imperial Parliament.
1592 March: Toshiie joins the Invasion of Korea. Toshiie's servant has a quarrel with Ieyasu's servant. Toshiie and Ieyasu defend Bizen-Nagoya castle together.
Toshiie begins work on remodelling Kanazawa Castle.
1593 The Japanese defeat the Ming Army in Korea and sue for peace. In August, Hideyoshi returns to Osaka. Toshiie and the others also return.
Toshinaga is made a Major-General of the Imperial Guard and Toshimasa is made a chamberlain.
Hideyoshi's son Hideyori is born, and Hideyoshi orders his marriage to Toyotomi Hidetsugu's (Hideyoshi's nephew and adopted son; he was ordered to commit suicide two years later by his uncle.) daughter. Toshiie and Matsu are asked to be go-betweens. (In Japan, complying with the old formalies of arranged marriages, an older couple, either relations of work superiros, are asked to act as "go-betweens" - stemming from the days in which the go-between would literally bring the married couple together.)
1594 April: Toshiie is promoted to Secondary Imperial Counsellor of the Lower Third Rank. Toshimasa is promoted to Chamberlain of the Fourth Rank.
Toshiie resigns his position as Secondary Imperial Counsellor.
November: the Maeda mansion is built at Fushimi, Kyoto.
1595 March: Omi-Takashima county is added to Toshiie's domains, as well as Niikawa county in Etchu.
Hideyoshi stays in Toshiie's Kyoto mansion.
July: Toshiie, Ukita Hidiie, Ieyasu, and Mori Terumoto, among others, swear allegiance to Hideyori and Toshiie is made his guardian.
1596 March: Ieyasu visits the Maeda's Kyoto mansion.
Toshiie is promoted to Primary Imperial Counsellor of the Lower Second Rank, and Ieyasu is made Inner Minster of the Full Second Rank. In August Fushimi Castle is destroyed by an earthquake, and Toshiie goes to enquire about Hideyoshi's welfare.
1597 Toshiie resigns from his post as Primary Imperial Counsellor.
Toshinaga is made a councillor.
Toshinaga moves from Etchu-Moroyama castle to Toyama.
November: Hideyoshi gives Toshiie the tea-caddy known as "Fuji-Nasu", and Toshiie is allowed to use a "Tenmoku" (A wide shallow tea cup used for Tenmoku tea.) tea cup.
1598 March: Hideyoshi and Hideyori host the Daigoji Flower Viewing. Toshiie and Matsu attend.
April: Toshinaga is created Secondary Imperial Counsellor of the Lower Third Rank.
Toshiie retires, taking 260,000 as his personal income, and Toshinaga succeeds him as head of the house. Toshiie goes to take the waters at Ueno-Kusatsu.
June: Toshiie goes to Kyoto to visit the ill Hideyoshi.
July: The daimyos swear allegiance to Hideyori and write out an Oath of Allegiance at Toshiie's Fushimi mansion. Toshiie, Toshinaga, and Toshimasa receive gifts willed to them by Hideyoshi.
August: Hideyoshi appoints Toshiie as one of the Five Regents (Toshiie, Ieyasu, Mori Terumoto, Ukita Hideie, and Uesugi Kagekatsu) and passes away on the 18th.
The Five Regents order the withdrawal of troops from Korea.
Toshiie weakens towards the end of the year.
1599 January: the daimyos pay their New Year's respects to Hideyori at Fushimi Castle, and Toshiie as his guardian. Hideyori moves to Osaka Castle
February: Ieyasu violates the Toyotomi Code. He is called to account by the other four regents and the Five Magistrates, and peace is restored.
Matsu writes up Toshiie's last will and testament. Ieyasu writes him a get-well letter.
April: Toshiie passes away on the 27th. Matsu shaves her head and becomes a nun by the name of Hoshun'in. Toshiie's body is brought to Kanazawa and buried on the slopes of Nodayama.
August: After Toshinaga returns to Kanazawa, Masuda Nagamori secretly told Ieyasu to beware of Toshinaga. Ieyasu was about to attack Toshinaga, but Yokoyama Nagachika, of the Kaga Eight Houses, came down to Osaka to clear things up, and the affair blew over.
December: Toshinaga resigns his position as Secondary Imperial Counsellor.
1600 Toshinaga set up Noda-Hoenji Temple to house Toshiie's mausoleum.
Hoshun'in goes to Edo as a hostage.
September: Toshinaga sets out for the Battle of Sekigahara, but is too late to fight. Toshimasa does not join him.
Ieyasu promises his grand-daughter, Lady Tama, to Toshinaga's son Toshitsune in marriage. He takes away Toshimasa's fief (later Toshimasa and his wife move to Saga near Kyoto).
October: Ieyasu grants Toshinaga the provinces of Kaga, Noto, and Etchu, with a total income of 1,220,000 koku.
1601 September: Toshitsune and Tama marry.
Toshitsune becomes head of the family, and Lady Go, who was married to Ukita Hideie, returns home to Kanazawa.
1602 January: Toshinaga has an audience with Hidetada (Ieyasu's son) in Edo and visits his mother.
February: Toshinaga has an audience with Ieyasu and Hidetada.
March: Hoshun'in goes to take the waters at Settu Arima until October.
Kanazawa Castle is struck by lightning and the keep is destroyed and never rebuilt.
1603 Ieyasu becomes the "Sei-I-Tai-Shogun", the "Barbarian-Subduing General". The Edo Shogunate begins.
Ukita Hideie, after being imprisoned at Suruga-Kuno, is exiled to Hachijo Island.
1604 Toshitaka (Toshiie's fifth son, later lord of Nanokaichi domain) goes to Edo to serve Hoshun'in.
1605 Hidetada becomes the second Shogun after Ieyasu retires.
Toshinaga retires and Toshitsune becomes the third Lord Maeda.
1607 Toshinaga has an audience with Ieyasu and later with Hidetada.
Hoshun'in erects a hall at the Daitokuji Temple in Kyoto.
1609 Toyama Castle burns. Toshinaga returns to Takaoka.
1610 Hoshun'in remodels the Sojiji Temple in Noto.
Toshinaga suffers from a malignant swelling.
1611 Toshinaga writes his will.
1613 Toyotomi Hideyori faces off against Ieyasu and asks Toshinaga to help him.
1614 May: Toshinaga dies on the 20th.
June: Hoshun'in visits her son's grave in Takaoka, and returns to Kanazawa with Gyokusen'in, Toshinaga's widow.
Toshitsune sees his first military action in the Winter Siege of Osaka.
Toshitsune's mother Jufukuin goes to Edo.
1615 Toshitsune goes to Osaka again to participate in the Summer Siege. Osaka Castle falls, and Hideyori and his mother, Lady Yodo, commit suicide.
1616 April: Ieyasu dies.
Toshitaka, in recognition of his work in the Summer Siege, is granted the 10,014 koku fief of Ueno-Nanokaichi.
1617 July: Hoshun'in dies on the 16th in Kanazawa Castle. She is buried next to Toshiie on Nodayama, and some of her bones are taken to her hall in the Daitokuji, Kyoto.
