| 1582 | January: Toshiie
builds Komaruyama Castle at Nanao. Nobunaga and Ieyasu defeat Takeda Katsuyori at the Battle of Tenmokuzan. Toshiie attacks Etchu-Toyama Castle and Uozu Castle with Shibata Katsuie. The Honnoji Incident in June (when Nobunaga was betrayed and murdered) makes them withdraw quickly. Hideyoshi makes a forced march from the Chugoku region and annihilates Akechi Mistuhide, Nobunaga's betrayer. July: Toshiie burns down the Tempeiji temple at Noto-Sekidozan and defeats Nukui Kagataka, Miyake Munetaka, and the priest-soldiers. |
| 1583 | Toshiie and Toshinaga
both participate in Shibata Katsuie's attack on Omi. At
the Battle of Shizugatake Katsuie flees in defeat.
Toshiie flees back to Echizen-Fuchu and surrenders to
Hideyoshi. Katsuie commits suicide at his castle in
Kita-no-Sho. Toshiie mops up Kaga. In addition to Noto he is given Kahoku and Ishikawa counties in Kaga and moves to Kanazawa Castle. Toshinaga moves from Etchizen-Fuchu to Matto, and his income increases to 40,000 koku. |

driven back at the Battle of Suemori Castle. Gold is found under Mt Hodatsu in Noto. |

Kanazawa for the advance into Etchu. Toshiie participates
and expels Sassa Narimasa from Toyama Castle. Toshinaga is given the three counties of Imizu, Tonami, and Nei in Etchu and bases himself in Moriyama. November: Maeda Hidetsugu (Toshiie's youngest brother) and his wife are crushed to death when an earthquake destroys Kibune Castle. |

the famous Tea Master, invites Toshiie and Asano Nobumasa
to a tea ceremony. Toshiie is appointed Special General of the Imperial Guard. |

promoted to Full Fourth Rank and joins the Imperial
Parliament. Toshiie and others set out for the Kanto to conquer Hojos. They surrender in July, and Ieyasu is given the eight provinces of the Kanto. |

the Ming Army in Korea and sue for peace. In August,
Hideyoshi returns to Osaka. Toshiie and the others also
return. Toshinaga is made a Major-General of the Imperial Guard and Toshimasa is made a chamberlain. Hideyoshi's son Hideyori is born, and Hideyoshi orders his marriage to Toyotomi Hidetsugu's (Hideyoshi's nephew and adopted son; he was ordered to commit suicide two years later by his uncle.) daughter. Toshiie and Matsu are asked to be go-betweens. (In Japan, complying with the old formalies of arranged marriages, an older couple, either relations of work superiros, are asked to act as "go-betweens" - stemming from the days in which the go-between would literally bring the married couple together.) |

the Maeda's Kyoto mansion. Toshiie is promoted to Primary Imperial Counsellor of the Lower Second Rank, and Ieyasu is made Inner Minster of the Full Second Rank. In August Fushimi Castle is destroyed by an earthquake, and Toshiie goes to enquire about Hideyoshi's welfare. |

| 1598 | March: Hideyoshi and
Hideyori host the Daigoji Flower Viewing. Toshiie and
Matsu attend. April: Toshinaga is created Secondary Imperial Counsellor of the Lower Third Rank. Toshiie retires, taking 260,000 as his personal income, and Toshinaga succeeds him as head of the house. Toshiie goes to take the waters at Ueno-Kusatsu. June: Toshiie goes to Kyoto to visit the ill Hideyoshi. July: The daimyos swear allegiance to Hideyori and write out an Oath of Allegiance at Toshiie's Fushimi mansion. Toshiie, Toshinaga, and Toshimasa receive gifts willed to them by Hideyoshi. August: Hideyoshi appoints Toshiie as one of the Five Regents (Toshiie, Ieyasu, Mori Terumoto, Ukita Hideie, and Uesugi Kagekatsu) and passes away on the 18th. The Five Regents order the withdrawal of troops from Korea. Toshiie weakens towards the end of the year. |
| 1599 | January: the daimyos
pay their New Year's respects to Hideyori at Fushimi
Castle, and Toshiie as his guardian. Hideyori moves to
Osaka Castle February: Ieyasu violates the Toyotomi Code. He is called to account by the other four regents and the Five Magistrates, and peace is restored. Matsu writes up Toshiie's last will and testament. Ieyasu writes him a get-well letter. April: Toshiie passes away on the 27th. Matsu shaves her head and becomes a nun by the name of Hoshun'in. Toshiie's body is brought to Kanazawa and buried on the slopes of Nodayama. August: After Toshinaga returns to Kanazawa, Masuda Nagamori secretly told Ieyasu to beware of Toshinaga. Ieyasu was about to attack Toshinaga, but Yokoyama Nagachika, of the Kaga Eight Houses, came down to Osaka to clear things up, and the affair blew over. December: Toshinaga resigns his position as Secondary Imperial Counsellor. |

Noda-Hoenji Temple to house Toshiie's mausoleum. Hoshun'in goes to Edo as a hostage. September: Toshinaga sets out for the Battle of Sekigahara, but is too late to fight. Toshimasa does not join him. Ieyasu promises his grand-daughter, Lady Tama, to Toshinaga's son Toshitsune in marriage. He takes away Toshimasa's fief (later Toshimasa and his wife move to Saga near Kyoto). October: Ieyasu grants Toshinaga the provinces of Kaga, Noto, and Etchu, with a total income of 1,220,000 koku. |
