After the
Meiji Restoration
As a result of the abolition of feudal domains and the establishment of a centralized prefectural system put in place by the Meiji government, the castle site fell under the control of the War Ministry, and all unnecessary buildings were torn down. For a period of time the main buildings in the secondary enclosure were used as regimental headquarters before they were burnt down in an accidental fire which also destroyed many of the other remaining buildings. Although barracks were still standing on various parts of the site, after the Second World War it became campus to Kanazawa National University.
